American Schools Foundation Alliance

Membership Benefits

Why should my school foundation join ASFA?

Benefits:

  1. FREE BEST PRACTICES GUIDE:  This 15-page guide covers a variety of topics that are important to a foundation’s business practices, such as financial oversight, transparency, a fundraising policy, and a conflict of interest policy.

  2. FREE LIST OF GRANTS for 501(c)(3) ORGANIZATIONS:  ASFA realizes that foundations need alternative sources of revenue.  A list of 38 grant opportunities is provided for members.  ASFA continuously searches for more grant opportunities to add to this list. The eligibility requirements of these grants will differ depending on the grant provider.

  3. FREE LIST OF PRO BONO ATTORNEYS: ASFA has compiled a list of law firms which offer pro bono services to 501(c)(3) organizations.  Many foundations are not aware that these services exist, but ASFA has identified the firms as a convenience to our member foundations.  The law firms conduct pro bono at their discretion, and ASFA does not guarantee that services will be provided.

  4. FREE ARCHIVED NEWSLETTERS:  ASFA will provide a periodic newsletter, which covers concise, foundation specific topics.  Members have access to all newsletters.

    EXAMPLE:
Here is how a past issue would be useful:  If a foundation board decides to aggressively market its foundation in September 2010, the ASFA Newsletter published in February 2010 entitled “Communication is Key to Unlocking Donors” would be helpful.  The public relations, marketing and branding tips can make the foundation’s marketing campaign easier to develop and more effective.

  5. FREE ARCHIVED “FEATURED FOUNDATIONS":  Every quarter ASFA invites a member foundation to be profiled.  The profile primarily includes the foundation’s fundraising techniques and how its donations are used.  These profiles can give your foundation valuable ideas on how to initiate fundraising and solicit donations in your community.

  6. FREE ACCESS TO MEMBERS’ FORUM:  You may “chat” with other members to learn from other foundation’s experiences and strategies to achieve your objectives.

  7. FREE ONLINE MEMBER DIRECTORY:  To facilitate exclusive access to other members' contact information, ASFA provides all of its members with the proprietary list of names and contact information of all foundation members.

  8. NATIONAL CONFERENCE DISCOUNT:  ASFA holds a national conference each year.  The Inaugural Conference was held in Chicago in April, 2010 and the second conference is scheduled for San Francisco in April, 2011.  Please take a minute to read the conference attendees’ testimonials from the 2010 Conference.  They are located in “Foundation Tools” at www.asfalliance.org.  Members have the added benefit to attend conferences at discounted rates.

  9. DISCOUNTS ON EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES:  ASFA offers webinars, toolkits, and consultative services to help foundations learn creative ways to conduct their business effectively and enhance success.

  10. RISK MANAGEMENT DISCOUNT:  To protect a foundation's hard working volunteers, the foundation should be covered by Directors’ & Officers’ Liability/Errors & Omissions Insurance.  ASFA members receive a risk management discount on their insurance premiums through the School Foundation Insurance Program School Foundation Insurance Program (SFIP).  Optional coverage such as General Liability is also available.
