One foundation’s major fundraising success is attributed to engaging its community
San Carlos Foundation honored for raising $1.7 million for schools

At a time when education foundations are particularly challenged to raise significant amounts of money, the San Carlos Education Foundation in California was recently honored for raising $1.7 million dollars during the 2009-2010 fiscal year.
While many communities may feel that raising the amount of funds that the San Carlos Education Foundation received is insurmountable, all foundations can benefit from the importance of engaging a community to contribute. “Last year, over 50 percent of families in the district contributed to our annual giving campaign” according to Ms. Sallie Gasparini, Co-President of the San Carlos Education Foundation. Ms. Gasparini also stated that the foundation’s success “was not the result of only a few wealthy contributors, but a community outpouring of support.”
Mayor Randy Royce and the City Council of San Carlos presented the Foundation Co-Presidents with a proclamation for raising money that “is equal to about 7 percent of the district’s entire budget. Without the parents and community support for public education in San Carlos, the elementary schools would have to consider cutting or eliminating (numerous programs) . . .”
