School Sports Fund Drive Extended

School foundations across the country are feeling the pressure of trying to help school districts uphold extra curricular activities as a result of state funding reductions.

One example of a joint effort to save a middle school sports program is occurring in Long Beach, California. According to the article, Middle school sports programs were cut from the Long Beach Unified School District’s 2011-2012 budget as part of nearly $60 million in reductions earlier this year in response to the state’s financial crisis.”The Long Beach Education Foundation (“LBEF”) is doing its part to help raise money to continue the program. The article states that LBEF raised $120,000 towards the initiative. Because the foundation’s goal was to raise $190,000, Long Beach Superintendent Chris Steinhauser is “pushing the deadline for raising money for middle school sports back until November 30th in order to give the Education Foundation time to apply for grant money and continue collecting donations and hosting benefits. The superintendent that People will do what they need to do to make sure we have a full sports season.
